Senior Presentation Reflection

Part 1: Two-Hour Presentation

(1) Two-Hour Presentation Student Assessment

P+

Why?
I feel like I met all the requirements on the presentation rubric. I excelled by adding my real world experiences to my presentation.

(2) What are you most proud of in your 2 hour presentation and why?
I am most proud of my powerpoint. I liked the way my slides looked and I added a lot of information to it that I wasn't planning to add before.

Part II: Overall Senior Project Experience

(3) What do you think you did well on in the project? What could you have done better? Please explain.

I think I did well on my science project. It was a simple project and concept but i had a lot of fun. I could have done better for my I-Search if i spent a lot more time on it. I could have revised it a lot more and it would have been simpler.

(4) What is your EQ and what is the best answer to your EQ?
My essential question is what is most imporatnt in being successful as a nurse specializing in nephrology and my best answer is building positive relationships with your patients.

(5) How has the last month of culminating events (e.g I-Search, Two-Hour, Exit etc) affected your answer to your EQ? Has it changed? Why or why not?
None of my answers changed because of the culminaing events. I had my answers down because of my research and my interviews.

(6) What suggestions do you have in order to improve the senior project?
Try not to put all the due dates of the projects together. It got really stressful at the end and now i'm like exhausted from everything. Also the advisory meeting were very helpful but i wish they were a little sooner and longer.

(7) Overall Senior Project Assessment

AP+

Why?
Most of my projects i recieved APs on, but i still tried my bestest efforts to get a better grade. Sometimes it just got really difficult. I didn't meet all requirements in some of my projects and i didn't go above and beyong in them too. But i feel overall i did try my best to recieve a better grade.

Service Learning

Literalhttps://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AgQoglZr_3osdGhnQy1rY1VLVmpyRzV6U1d2WGRTTXc&hl=en#gid=

I started my service learning with Seema Mathur at the dialysis center in Tustin. My job there was answering the phones, filing paperwork and welcoming patients. I then moved to the dialysis center in El Monte with Marietta Asumbrano. My job there was answering the phone, alphabetizing paperwork, and setting up dialysis machines.

Interpretive

I learnt alot from my service learning; the most important thing I learnt was a nephrology nurses job. I didn't know what a nephrology nurse actually did until I started service learning. I got to talk to a bunch of nurses and learn how they entered the field of nephrology. The nurses told me the process of specializing in nephrology and they answered all the questions I had. They were all very sweet and I had a great experience at service learning.

Applied

Because of service learning I came up with my answers to my EQ. I saw how the nurses and patients treated each other. They had a very fun, and loving relationship and I learnt it's important to have a positive relationship with your patients. Another important task a nurse has to do is implement/educate treatment plans for the patients. In order to effectively make a treatment plan a nurse must understand a patients lifestlye and habits.

    2 hour presentation rough draft

    Name: Sakshi Mathur
    Topic: Nephrology Nursing
    Presentation Teacher: Mr. Purther

Sponge activity:  For my sponge activity, I was thinking of putting the student in groups of four and having them work together in constructing a kidney. They will have different materials and together they have to come up with a model of their kidney.

Introduction: My EQ is, What is most important in being successful as a nurse specializing in nephrology?. I chose this topic because of my mom. My mom has been working with renal failure patients for the last 10 years. I have volunteered at her work for several times and have met all the team that works with renal failure patiens. About a year or so ago i decided on going to nursing school when i was deiciding on a specialt, i thought of nephrology. I have been interested in Nephrology for awhile now, watching my mom with the patients and the nurses it was something i wanted to research on and hopefully turn into a career down the road.  So far the plan of the day is to introduce myself, tell everyone why i picked this topic, then go on to talk about the schooling/career portion and mayve do an activity. After i'll start with my answers and then conclude with my best answer.

    Foundation:
    - I will talk about making nephrology nursing a career
    - I'll start with talking about the different types of nursing degrees BS and AA
-Then i'll introduce the different types of nurses someone could be which is either an RN or LPN/LVN.
    - After talking about the different types of nuses someone could be,i'll talk about the steps to specialize in nephrology.
    Body:

Answer 1:  Build positive relationships with your patients
-----Activity 1:  I want the students to feel how the patients feel and what kind of different cases nurses have to deal with. I was thinking about putting the students in pairs. Each pair will get a question to answer but every time theres a new question there will be a different emotion one person in the pair will play. Like if i give the pair a question that says give your biggest

Answer 2: Educate/implement treatment plans to the patients and families.
-----Activity 2:  When nurses are making the treatment plan they have to consult with all the doctors invovled with the patient. Therefore theres lot of teamwork invovled and the nurse is in charge of making the plan. So i will do a series of team building exercises with the students. They will be placed in groups on five and perform these tasks.

Conclusion:  At the end of my presentation i will explain my two answers i have presented on, restate what my best answer is and why, and talk about what i have learnt from this project and how i plan to use it in the future.
What is your best answer and why? My best answer is too build positive relationships with your patients. Before starting any treatment it's important for a nurse to get to know their patient and understand their needs and wishes. Building a postitive relationship will help the patient and the nurse.
What is your 3 most important sources and why? My three most important sources are my service learning, the book Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician, and Nicki Rockwell. Through service learning i got to experience what a nurse has to do, they let me set up the dialysis machine, put medication away, and handle paperwork. I learnt a lot while i was obersving the life of a nurse. The Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician was really really helpful. It taught about dialysis, the machines, the history everything. It was like the bible for dialysis. The explanations were even simple and straight to the point. Nicki Rockwell is a patient i got to talk to; she has been on dialysis for 10+ years. She told me about how the nurses treated her and how she felt when she was first diagnosed with renal failure. She was very helpful and answered all my questions that i had.
What is your product and why? My product is a career in nephrology nursing. I want to become a nurse and once you get passed nursing school and the RN test you have to specialize. My senior project gave me an opportunity to research and study about nephrology nursing.

    Independent Study 2

    1. https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AgQoglZr_3osdGhnQy1rY1VLVmpyRzV6U1d2WGRTTXc&hl=en&pli=1#gid=0

    2. Here's a picture of me at my moms annual take your daughter to work day. There I was taught about dialysis, i got to talk to different patients about their experiences and i got to shadow a nurse.

    3.
    (a) “I, Sakshi Mathur, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”

    (b) For my independent study I volunteered at the el monte dialysis clinic. At the center I answered the phone, set up the dialysis machines, and i filed some papers. I also attended my moms annual take your daighter to work day and there i got to talk to patients, and shadow nurses.

    Interpretive
Every week I volunteer about 6 hours and I wrote what what I did in my literal.

    Applied

Volunteering has given me an insight in nephrology nursing. I got to spend time working with the nurses are learning about their daily routine in the clinic. This lead me to my answer of mantaining relationships wth your patients. As a nephrology nurse, I learned that you spend a lot of time working with your pateints; days, weeks, years you name it. And if you dont have a good relationship it could put the patient in danger. Most patients feel lonely during the treatment and if they see a friendly face it gets them up and moving again.

    Art Rationale

    Why do it this way?

So i have decided to change my creative expression project. My new plan is to make a diseased kidney sitting in two hands. One hand will be a patient hand and another will be the nurses hand. It is symbolizing how a patient and nurse have to work together in order to take care of the patients life.

    Art Rationale

    Why do "this" this way?

I decided to sculpt a diseased kidney out of clay. There will be two tubes in one tube will be the things nurses do and in the other will be what happens to the patient because of the nurses. I think this is the best way to descibe my project in an artistic way.

    Creative Art Idea

    Topic: Dialysis

EQ: What is the most important in being successful as a nurse specializing in nephrology?

Art Idea: Making a diseased kidney out of paper machete and in one tube put all the things  nurses do tp help a patient and then in another tube the benefits of what they do.

Relates: My project is focusing on nursing and i though this was a clever way to symbolize nursing and dialysis.
